Planting bulbs for future blooms

Southland Kiwi Can Students Daffodil Planting

Mataura School pupils planted 1200 daffodil bulbs as a way of giving back to the community last week.

The daffodil planting day was arranged by Graeme Dingle Foundation Southland, as part of the Kiwi Can programme, Gore District Council (GDC) and Mataura School. Kiwi Can co-ordinator Jen Jacques said that the project came about following discussions with Mataura School on how they could help out in the community.

“There had been a few requests from throughout the community asking if the daffodils could be planted.

“So we thought it would be a great way for the kids to give back.”

The day was a success and ran smoothly, she said.

“The kids were very focused and enthusiastic.

“Students got a lot out of it and the best thing about it was that everyone took part.”

The daffodils were planted on Main St. About 120 pupils participated.

“The kids came to the site in groups and worked within half-hour slots and they planted 10 bulbs each.
