The gym at Kelston Girls’ College buzzed with excitement as 24 organisations from the community came together for our Stars programme’s Community Adventure. This event was designed to be more than just an exploration of future opportunities—it provided a dynamic, hands-on experience where students could connect with vital community resources, ask questions, and learn how to access support systems.
Alyssa Carr, the Stars Programme Coordinator, stood at the heart of the action, reflecting on the day’s purpose. “Community Adventure is about students having the opportunity to use the skills they’ve gained in the Stars programme to explore the community and find where they sit in it. It’s about recognising that as humans we’re holistic in nature and need to support our students in exploring all avenues of their well-being and ways to get involved in their community. The organisations brought in were examples of the types of organisations and opportunities students can get involved in and directly relevant to the unique nature and culture of Kelston Girls’ College. Students feedback that the morning was lots of fun, eye-opening and they have an increased desire to get involved in their community.”
Guided by their Peer Mentors, Year 9 mentees actively engaged with each organisation. With booklets of questions in hand, they moved from stall to stall, gathering valuable information and exploring how these community resources could help them navigate challenges and seize new opportunities.
