A call to ensure children disengaged with schooling don’t fall through the cracks. Newstalk ZB can reveal almost 10,000 children aged between five and 13 are not enrolled in formal education. The Ministry of Education says multiple factors are at play including the Omicron outbreak at the start of last year, as well as transfers of students to different schools. Graeme Dingle Foundation Research and Evaluation manager Julie Moore says all children have a right to go to school.

If they’re not enrolled in and they’re not receiving any education, then definitely parents should be held accountable.

Meanwhile, Act’s education spokesperson Chris Bailey says the Government simply can’t keep blaming COVID for the problem.

We need to really drum it in that education is incredibly important. The most important thing for a child success.
