EJ’s Story

EJ began his journey as a Stars Peer Mentor, ready to support and guide the younger students at Hornby High School. What started as an opportunity to connect quickly grew into a wonderful experience of building strong relationships and inspiring growth for both himself and the Year 9 students he mentors.

When EJ began his journey as a Stars Peer Mentor at Hornby High School, he was a quiet and thoughtful student stepping into leadership for the first time. Supporting a group of Year 9s came with new responsibilities, and while it was a big step, EJ approached it with care and a genuine desire to make a difference. From day one, he showed a willingness to learn and lead, embracing the opportunity to grow alongside the students he was guiding. EJ almost always offers to take the lead and step up, demonstrating natural initiative that inspires those around him.

What motivates him most is the transformation he sees in the young students he mentors. “The smiles we put on their faces, it’s amazing. It’s incredible how much positive change they go through, and happiness is the key to that change,” he says.

Juggling the responsibilities of being both a Student Leader and a Stars Peer Mentor hasn’t been easy. Time is his greatest challenge. But through careful planning and commitment, EJ has learned to balance his busy schedule and give his best to those who rely on him.

One unforgettable moment for EJ was his very first mentoring session. The Year 9s were quiet and unsure at first, but as EJ spent time with the group, they quickly began to bond. By the end, the group felt like one big family, a true reflection of EJ’s ability to break down barriers and create a welcoming environment. His consistent presence week after week has built trust with his mentees, creating a safe, supportive space where they feel heard and valued.

EJ delivered lessons on Te Whare Tapa Whā, helping students understand how much control they have over their wellbeing, an important step in encouraging their personal growth. At Stars Day Out, he supported Year 9s to step out of their comfort zones and build confidence. During Starsopoly, a hands-on event connecting rangatahi with local organisations through interactive challenges, EJ encouraged exploration and curiosity as students engaged with their community and discovered new career pathways.

Besides being a Stars Peer Mentor, EJ is also a student board representative, school prefect, volleyball coach, and an active member of the school’s broadcasting club. Beyond school, EJ continues to demonstrate his exceptional commitment to his community. He is a sergeant in the New Zealand Cadets No. 17 Squadron, a senior altar server at Our Lady of Victories Church, a participant in the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, and an engaged member of the Greater Hornby Residents Association.

Despite his many roles, EJ remains humble, kind, and always ready to lend a hand. His generosity, leadership, and dedication to serving others make him a true community-minded role model. Recently, he was recognised with the Couplands Bakeries Community Award of the month.

When asked how he chooses a favourite among all his community roles, EJ simply said, “All of it, I can’t choose one. They all make up my life.” He shared that the only thing he ever expected in return was a friendly smile.

Hornby High School Principal Iain Murray described him perfectly: “He has nothing but time for everyone. He will go about and help you with anything you want, ask him, and he will be there.” EJ does this for the happiness it brings everyone else.

Recently, EJ was selected as the Wigram Youth MP for 2025, an incredible honour that recognises his outstanding leadership and commitment to representing his community. Receiving the call from MP Hon Dr Megan Woods was a proud and defining moment. In this new role, EJ is focused on making sure the voices of young people in his community are heard. He plans to visit schools, deliver speeches in parliament, and connect with students through tours and conversations, all with the goal of empowering rangatahi.

As part of his commitment to the community, EJ led the Coin + Can drive in 2024, collecting donations for the Salvation Army to support those in need.

Looking ahead, EJ has big ambitions. Mid next year, he hopes to join the Air Force, but if his path changes, he’s ready to pursue a political career and one day serve as a full Member of Parliament. For now, he’s soaking up every moment of his final year at Hornby High School, a place that holds a special place in his heart. “There will be a lot of tears at the end because I will miss this place,” he says.

To incoming Year 9s, EJ shares some encouraging words: “Hornby High School is an amazing place. You will be taken care of by wonderful Stars Peer Mentors and teachers who will help you through school.”

And to new Stars Peer Mentors, EJ’s advice is simple and powerful: “Make it about the people. Focus on the true meaning of mentorship and the difference you can make in the lives of Year 9 students.”

EJ’s new role as Wigram Youth MP marks an exciting step forward in his leadership journey. Building on his meaningful contributions as a Stars Peer Mentor, he is poised to bring the perspectives of young people into important conversations beyond his school. Congratulations to EJ. We look forward to seeing the great things he will achieve as a young leader.
